This is typically due to upgrading from an older version of QuickTime and some older settings remained behind.  Here is the process to fix the problem.

1. Play a Safari Montage video.
2. Click anywhere on the area where the area is green and press F9
3. Uncheck "Directshow"
4. Close the browser and reopen
